During his 15 years exile, Victor Hugo wrote Les Travailleurs de la Mer (Toilers of the Sea) and dedicated it to the island of Guernsey
Just as his most famous novel, Les Miserables, drew from his French political knowledge, Toilers of the Sea revolves around everything he observed while there: the isolation of island-life, the sublime power of the sea, and the connection between man and nature.
Dave Shanks and Joy Mellins, two Producers with personal links to the island, are now looking to adapt this novel into a full-length feature film; paying powerful, emotional, and respectful homage: not only to Victor Hugo and the novel, but also to the island of Guernsey.
"I dedicate this book to the Rock of Hospitality and Liberty to that portion of Old Norman Ground inhabited by the Noble Little Nation of the Sea to the Island of Guernsey severe yet kind my present Asylum perhaps my tomb."
- Victor Hugo
